Customer of the Week: Advanced Myotherapy
Matthew Cleary is taking a holistic approach to myotherapy — one that goes deeper than simply treating muscular issues. It’s this personalised approach and attention to detail that makes him one of the best in Melbourne. Meet our latest Customer of the Week: Advanced Myotherapy.
Matthew is a myotherapist, or as he puts it, a muscle therapist. Myotherapy is a form of manual therapy which focuses on the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal pain.
Matthew’s job is to help people to move more freely and comfortably by lengthening those muscles back to their ideal position. The business uses a range of modalities including dry needling, cupping and advanced remedial massage.
But there is more to it than that. Matthew works to get to the root of the problem.
“We focus on the individual and that always determines which path we take.”
Matthew notes that degeneration is often caused by bad habits, but identifying these habits is the complicated part. His job is to help pinpoint these issues, be it poor posture, sleeping patterns or stress. He then empowers clients with the ability to better understand their bodies.
“We work by honing in on people’s personal circumstances — their job, stresses, sleeping or sleeping patterns so that they can get back in tune with their bodies.”
When Matthew opened his practice he noticed a recurring problem. Clients were coming to him with mistreated issues and had previously been misguided and ill-informed.
“Having debilitating pain is such a waste of life. Knowing I could make a difference was great fuel for my fire.”
The more people Matthew treated, the more convinced he became that he could help clients move correctly.
“You’ve got to get to know your clients on a deeper level so you can pinpoint where these issues are stemming from.”
With over 100 clients through his doors a week and full classes, Matthew is ready to take on more (believe it or not).
Matthew wants to move into education, providing helpful information for people pre and post surgery.
“If we get the client better educated, they will recover better, faster and for good.”
This is just a small part of his global mission to move people away from surgery altogether and look at ways we can look after our bodies better in modern society. Matthew believes many people undergo surgeries when there are safer alternatives out there, alternatives that will get to the root of the issue rather than treating them superficially. That is the difference between Advanced Myotherapy and other practices.
Matthew goal is for a well-rounded and ground-up approach to be taken to rehabilitation. The only way that this can be done is if health practitioners open their ears and their minds.
